Infinity symbol tattoos on two fingers

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

The photograph shows a hand with two small infinity symbols tattooed on separate fingers, with one symbol sitting above the other on the adjacent finger. The symbols are drawn in thin black outlines with a double-stroke edge and no shading. The skin is light and the background is a pale tiled floor, with another hand partly visible at the top of the frame.

Dear Mags,

Forty-one days out of Immingham and the sea has finally stopped being a rumour. The chief engineer swears the bearing on number two will hold until Panama, and I have stopped arguing with him, because arguing with a man who talks to his engine is like arguing with the weather. I write this on the back of a manifest in the mess, under a bulb that buzzes like a trapped wasp, while Pip snores in the bunk above me.

Remember the bowline lesson at Whitby? Old Harry Dunn showed us the loop that never slips, and then, when nobody was looking, he drew a figure of eight lying on its side across my palm with a pencil stub. He said it was the sign for something that goes round and never runs out. I thought it was soft. I think now he was giving me a map. Every time a line runs through the blocks and comes back to where it started, I think of that loop.

The rope is the one thing on this ship I trust without question. Last Tuesday a fitting gave way on the starboard boom, and the hawser came snaking across the deck, and it was the coiled hitch Harry taught me that held. I want you to know I kept my hands on it even when the skin came off.

Here is the bit I have been putting off. I drew two loops on the inside cover of the log, one above the other, the way they would sit if we were ever daft enough to match. Keep the sheet folded in the tin with the ticket stubs. When I am back on the quay, I will bring the pencil.

Love, Dan
