Lumpy Space Princess and roses on a thigh

Traditional · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A purple cartoon character with a yellow star on its head sits within a gold banner that reads LUMP OFF, framed by pink wild roses with yellow centres and green leaves. The design uses bold black outlines with soft shading in the purple and pink areas. The tattoo fills most of the frame against plain skin and a pale background.

The last train out of Hensby Road on a Sunday carries mostly sheep farmers and sleeping students, so when a purple cloud drifted through the carriage doors at Ashby Junction I assumed someone had left a beanbag on the platform. It hovered at the height of my belt, a yellow star wobbling on top like a badly pinned brooch, and announced in a voice like a kettle with ambitions that it was a princess and the train was going the wrong way.

I asked for a ticket. It produced a gold banner from nowhere, unrolled it across two seats and told me that was its ticket, its passport and its tiara, and that I should read the word on it properly. The word was LUMP OFF. I said I could see that and I still needed to see a ticket. Somewhere between Ashby and the tunnel, pink wild roses began to sprout from the luggage rack, yellow-centred and entirely unbothered by the rules of rail travel, and the cloud sighed the way a teenager sighs when a parent says no.

At Hensby Road it rolled off the step in a slow purple heap, shedding petals on the platform like confetti at a wedding nobody invited it to. I stamped the last empty line of my timetable and watched it bobble away towards the car park. The next morning, in the lost property tray behind the ticket office, there was a single gold banner, folded very neatly, with two pink petals tucked inside it. Nobody has come to claim it, and I have stopped asking.
