Lumpy Space Princess and flowers on a thigh
Traditional · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A purple cartoon character with a yellow star on its head sits among pink five-petalled flowers with yellow centres, with a curled brown tail-like shape rising behind it. A banner reading LUMP OFF runs across the lower half of the design. The design has bold black outlines, flat colour fills and soft shading on the petals and banner, and it fills the frame against a light background.

Mrs Ivy Pargeter had grown runner beans on the Hollins Road allotments for forty years, and in all that time nothing had ever sat on her rhubarb uninvited. So when a purple lump came rolling under the gate on a wet Tuesday, sulking and shoving aside the bramble with its stubby arms, she told it plainly that the rhubarb was not a cushion.

"I am a princess," it said, and the yellow star on its head gave a wobble of outrage. "I am a princess who has been left in a vegetable patch."
"Then you're a princess with muck on her hands," said Ivy, and went on lifting potatoes.
It stayed anyway. It sulked under the water butt and sulked on the compost heap, and every time Ivy bent to her work it sighed loudly enough to shake the leaves. It told her that other princesses had banners and wild roses and proper thrones, and that nobody had ever asked it to be quiet about anything. On the third day Ivy noticed it had grown to the size of a laundry basket, with a brown curl of something like a tail rising behind it to catch the drizzle. She fetched a strip of old bunting from the shed, painted two words on it with a tin of green gloss, and tied it round the creature's middle. It read LUMP OFF, which Ivy said was a fair description of its manners.
That spring, wild roses came up along the fence where the bramble had been. Each one had five pink petals and a yellow heart, and the purple cloud drifted above them in the afternoons, grumbling softly while the bees came close. Ivy never did find out where it had come from, but she left the gate open for it all the same.
