Lumpy Space Princess and roses on a thigh

Traditional · Other · Colour · Photo

A purple blob character with a yellow star on its head, taken from the cartoon Adventure Time, sits above a gold banner that reads LUMP OFF. Three pink five-petalled flowers with yellow centres and green leaves surround the banner, and the character has a curled horn-like shape rising behind it. Bold black outlines define the motifs, with flat areas of purple, pink, yellow, green and gold, and the design fills the upper thigh.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The sea-lump came up out of the Celtic Sea the spring the Mary Ann Teague lost her cook overboard. It was purple, the colour of bruised plums, and a yellow star sat on its crown like a sweet on a cake. Old Tobias Wren said it was a squall-spirit. The boy Pell said it was only weed. Nobody asked it anything.

It introduced itself on the third day, in a voice like a gull with a grievance. I am a princess, it said. Not a lump. A princess. A curl of dark kelp rose behind it and twitched whenever it was offended, which was often. Tobias asked where its kingdom lay. The lump said the question was extremely rude and that everyone had been wrong about it for years.

It followed the ship for eleven days. It refused the biscuit, complained about the tar, and spread itself across the stern like a damp shawl whenever the sun came out. On the twelfth morning a storm came off the Lizard so fast the gulls did not bother to scream. The lump flattened itself across the bow, wide and purple, and held the wind off the timbers until the mainmast cracked and fell harmlessly into the foam.

When they limped into Penzance the crew asked what it wanted for its trouble. It wanted a banner. Pell, who could spell, lettered it in gold leaf across the transom in words the lump had chosen itself, and it floated off past the harbour wall, pink sea-thrift bobbing in its wake, quite pleased to be insulted in its own honour.
