Other · Colour · Photo

The image shows two matching cartoon tattoos on the inner wrists, with Minnie Mouse on the left wearing a red bow and Mickey Mouse on the right, both in profile and looking upward. Each character is outlined in dark linework and filled with flat colour, with a trail of small purple, blue and yellow stars and dots rising between them. Script lettering reading "Believe in" and "Your Dreams" sits beneath each character against a pale, soft-focus background.

Sit down, the pair of you, and stop squinting at the sea, it won't hurry the boat along. Right. The two mice lived under the lighthouse steps on Eilean Dubh, where the wind came in sideways and the gulls had the crusts off your sandwich before you'd turned round. The one with the round ears was called Tam, and he counted rocks when he couldn't sleep. The other had a red bow tied on her ear with a bit of binder twine, and her name was Ailsa, and she was frightened of nothing except being bored.

One winter the lamp went dark. The keeper's wife had let the oil run low, and the boats came in blind, and the children up the brae stopped looking out of their windows because there was nothing to look at. Tam said it was the sea's fault. Ailsa said it was the sky's, for keeping its stars to itself. So they climbed the cliff path in the sleet, past the sheep and the broken wall, all the way up to the place where the sky comes down low enough to touch and the stars sit in the heather like spilt sugar.

They gathered what they could in Tam's tin cup and Ailsa's bow, and every time a star slipped off the rim they caught it with their paws and laughed till they hiccupped. Then they ran back down and tipped the lot over the edge of the lighthouse gallery. The dust rose up in a fizzing trail, blue and yellow and purple, and it hung there over the harbour like it was thinking about it.

And that's why, if you stand on the harbour wall and say the words properly, believe in, and then whatever it is you want, the air goes glittery and somebody's grandad swears he saw a mouse wave. Now go on, the boat's in. Mind the step, it's still wet from them.
