Minnie and Mickey Mouse matching wrist tattoos

Other · Colour · Photo

Two matching cartoon-style tattoos show the heads of Minnie and Mickey Mouse, one on each wrist, with trails of coloured sparkles and stars. The words Believe in and your Dreams are written in script beneath the characters. Minnie has a red bow and purple ears, Mickey is shaded in blue and black, and both use bold black outlines with soft colour fills.

The lettering had to be dry by Wednesday, when the Whitsun crowds came up the pier and Mr Dacre expected his booths to say what they meant. Ivy Marsh sat on an upturned crate with a tin of size and a brush no thicker than a bristle, copying the curling script from a card her mother kept in her purse. Believe in. Her hand kept drifting toward the gap between the planks where the sea showed through.

The boy came up the steps just after the gulls had gone quiet. He was perhaps eleven, cap in both fists, and he wanted a mouse on the shutter, round-eared and grinning, with a red bow tied at one side for his sister Dot, who sold tickets in the booth across the way. "She says she'll only stay if somebody's painted a thing for her," he said. Ivy measured two circles with a pair of compasses, mixed the cheap red Mr Dacre had bought for the donkeys, and let the sparkles spill off the brush like spray off the groyne.

Dacre grumbled that nobody on a pier believed in anything but the tide tables, but he paid her for the second shutter without looking up. The boy's sixpence was still warm in her palm when she finished the other mouse in deep blue, its ears shaded black at the rims, and wrote your Dreams beneath it in a hand that wobbled only once.

That evening the lamps came on along the rail, and the two booths faced each other across the boards with their trails of stars meeting in the middle. Dot stood between them with her arms folded, reading the words aloud, then laughed and said they read backwards from her side, which was the only way anyone ever saw a promise clearly from the far end of a pier.
