Matching sisters tattoos on three ankles
Lettering · Ankle · Mixed · Photo
Three ankles rest on green grass, each with a black script word "Sisters" set inside an open heart outline, with a small cluster of tiny butterflies beneath it. The linework is fine and even, and the butterflies are picked out in pink, purple and teal against the black lettering. The close framing places the tattoos in the centre of the frame, with two pairs of football boots adding bright colour around them.

Dear Nell, the swallows have gone from the hayloft and the butterflies came late this year, a rush of small brown ones over the turnip rows. I counted them the way you used to count the stairs at Gran's, out loud and wrong. Mum says you'll be home for the wedding if the ferry holds.

I found your old tin of watercolours under the dresser. The pink has dried into a crust but the teal is still sound, so I used it on the back of the coal bill to draw the thing you always drew, a heart with a loop round it like a bent wire. I wrote the word inside in Gran's copperplate, which I have practised for six weeks, and the letters came out leaning the way hers did. I stuck three tiny butterflies underneath, one pink, one purple, one the teal, because you said once that every word needs something to fly off it.
Mr Harrow at the post office says the mail boat is cancelled until the ice clears from the sound, so this letter will either go with you or sit in the drawer until you walk up the road. I have left a gap beneath the butterflies, about the width of one more, and I haven't decided what colour it should be. You can fill it in when you're back, in whatever paint you like. If you're late I'll be at the gate with the tin open and the kettle on, counting the cars and getting every number wrong.
