Colour cartoon tattoo of a Minion saying Ooohhhh Banana in a speech bubble, placed on the lower abdomen above a waistband.

Minion with speech bubble on abdomen

Other · Colour · Photo

A small cartoon Minion character in yellow, orange and blue, wearing grey goggles and blue overalls, stands on the lower abdomen with its mouth open. A black-outlined speech bubble beside it reads Ooohhhh Banana. The linework is clean and bold, with simple flat colour and light shading, and the tattoo sits off-centre in a close, well-lit shot.

Mind the crate, I said, but the little yellow thing had already wriggled out from under the tarpaulin, goggles fogged with drizzle, blue dungarees dripping, staring at my bananas as if they were the crown jewels. This is Tanner Lane market on a Saturday, where the rain has never once given up, and where Ada Fenwick has sold fruit from the same barrow since before the cobbles were laid.

"Oooohhhh, banana!" it said, in a voice like a kettle thinking about boiling. It climbed the barrow leg with its small grey gloves, tipped the top bunch onto the wet slats, and began to hug the fruit to its chest. I reached for it. It held up a bottle cap, then a bent teaspoon, then a button it had clearly bitten off its own overalls. The bargaining went on for some time, mostly in grunts and pointing, while the queue behind it grew restless and a pigeon attempted to settle the matter in its own favour.

In the end I took the teaspoon. Thirty years of selling to bishops, pickpockets and one stubborn goat had taught me that a fair trade is the only kind that lets a man sleep. The creature peeled its banana with the care of a surgeon, held the first bite up to the drizzle as if toasting the weather, and sat down on a crate to eat it.

And here is the part nobody believes. The rain stopped for exactly as long as that bite lasted, every umbrella on the lane folded at once, and a hundred faces turned to look at me, waiting to see what I had just bought.
