Paw print in a heart with script

Lettering · Black and grey · Photo

A solid black paw print sits inside a single-line black heart outline. Script lettering in black runs along the right side and lower edge of the heart, reading paw prints and in my heart. The linework is clean and even, the image is in black ink only, and the design is centred on plain skin against a soft, blurred background.

Nobody on the night shift at Calder Ward could say when the dog first came in off the ambulance bay. The porters called her Bramble, a black and tan collie with one ear that stood and one that didn't, and she walked the corridors at two in the morning as if she had a list to check.

Sister Ruth Okafor said the dog had belonged to Eddie Marsh, the porter who took the night lift for thirty years and dropped dead beside the vending machine one February. Nobody had told the collie. She still padded to the lift at the top of every hour and sat with her head on one side, waiting for a jingle of keys that would not come.

One wet November the floor was mopped and drying when the ward found paw prints crossing it from the lift to the window at the far end, each one stamped clean and dark. The cleaner swore she had done the corridor twice. Ruth followed the prints with a torch and found they stopped under the window where Eddie used to sit with his flask. Bramble lay down in the same place, nose to the glass, watching the car park lamps.

Ruth did not wipe them up. In the night log, between the obs and the bed changes, she wrote that the floor had been walked by someone who knew the way. Bramble went home with the morning porter that week, and the prints dried by noon. Ruth still leaves the lift light on at the top of the hour, and nobody on Calder Ward has asked her why.
