Black and grey shaded paw print with a small heart, above the script name Abby and the dates 2004-2014, on the inner forearm.

Paw print with name and dates on a forearm

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A shaded black and grey paw print sits on the forearm, with five toe pads above a larger main pad that has a small heart cut into its lower edge. Beneath the print, the script word Abby is set above the numerals 2004-2014 in a thin, clean font. The photograph is taken straight on against a pale background, so the linework and grey shading are clearly visible.

The concrete was still soft when Biscuit trotted straight across the greenhouse path, and I swore at him loud enough to wake next door's hens. He didn't care. He stopped, looked back at me with his ears flat, and left five neat toe-prints and a larger pad in the grey, as if he'd meant to sign his name. Dora came out with a dishcloth and told me to leave it be, so I did, and I pressed the heart into the bottom edge of the big pad with the rim of a jam jar lid while the mix was still giving.

The path cracked the winter after Biscuit's last walk, but the prints stayed whole. I'd watch them through the glass while I potted up the sweet peas, the toes gone soft at the edges with moss, the heart the only part still sharp. Dora's grandson wanted to lift the slab for a new drain, and I told him I'd do it myself, because a man should be allowed to make one decision about his own garden without a spade in someone else's hand.

It took me most of a Saturday with a borrowed bar and a wheelbarrow with one dodgy wheel. I carried the slab to the bottom of the plot, under the damson, and set it down where the morning sun reaches first. Then I fetched a stub of white chalk from the shed and wrote the two dates beside the print, the way you'd mark a stone in a churchyard.

By July the sweet peas had climbed the fence and spilled over the edge of the slab, purple and blowsy, and every time I bent to pull a weed I caught the pale dates through the leaves.
