Pointed-eared creature tattoo on calf
Calf · Black and grey · Photo
The left side shows a pen-and-ink line drawing of a small, thin creature with large pointed ears, big round eyes and a wrapped cloth. The right side shows the same design tattooed on the outer calf of a leg, in a single brownish-grey tone. The fine hatching and contour lines are visible, and the figure is centred on the lower leg against a plain pavement background.

Mrs Pargeter had been dead a fortnight when the wedding guests began arriving at Coldharbour Hall, and Nell still hadn't found the silver. The hob came up to her shoulder when he stood straight, which he never did. He crept along the skirting boards with a tea towel knotted over one shoulder, muttering that the bride's mother had taken the good cutlery and would be sorry for it.

"She's counted it twice," Nell said, shifting a bucket of white roses off the stairs. "Sit down before someone sees your ears."
He sat on the flagstones and drew his knees up under the cloth. His ears trembled. "Forty years I polished for that family. Forty years, and not one of them wrote me a card."
At three o'clock the church bells rang across the water meadows and the house emptied into its best clothes. Nell carried the cake up the back stairs and found the silver where it had always been, in the dumbwaiter, wrapped in old bed linen, the hob's neat knots on every parcel. She said nothing. By the time the speeches started, the spoons were laid and the tables gleamed, and the hob was nowhere to be seen.
At dusk she went out to the lane for the flowers that had been left behind. The tea towel hung from the gatepost, folded in half and pinned with a sprig of rosemary, and beneath it, in the wet gravel, two small bare footprints led off towards the wood.
