Sleeping cat curled around a heart on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single-line black outline of a cat curled around the top of a heart, with its eye closed and whiskers drawn. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the design sits on pale skin against a patterned blanket. The composition is centred on the wrist with the tattoo filling most of the frame.

Dear Tom, the rain has been coming sideways across the market square since seven, and I have sold nothing but a brass thimble to a man who wanted it for his teeth. Mrs Okafor's cat has taken up residence under my trestle table, which is the only dry patch in Ashworth. She never asks for anything. She just curls herself into a loop on my spare tarpaulin and sleeps through the shouting.

This morning I tried to draw her for the card tin, the one I keep for the children. I could not get her back right. Every time I lifted the pen the line broke and she looked like a wet sock. So I stopped lifting it. I let the nib run from her ear down her spine, round the tuck of her paws, and back up to the whiskers without once taking it off the paper. When I was done there was a heart in the middle of her, because my hand had drawn the space she was keeping warm.

A woman in a yellow mac stopped at the stall. She turned the card over in her fingers for a long time, then asked whether it could be made smaller, the size of a fingernail, and whether the cat could keep her eyes shut. I said the cat always keeps her eyes shut when she is somewhere she trusts. She bought two.

Mrs Okafor came for her cat at dusk, and the rain had stopped. The cat stretched, looked at me as if I were the one who needed a lift home, and left a single damp print on the card. I have pinned it above the till. Come Saturday if the weather holds, and bring the good pen. Love, Ada.
