Small hedgehog tattoo on a foot

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small tattoo of a hedgehog in profile sits on the side of a bare foot, just below the ankle. The outline is drawn in clean black linework with simple dark fill on the spines and body. The ink is the only colour, and the tattoo is set against plain skin with a rug and wooden floor blurred in the background.

Ten past four, and the lorry from Calais had already been waved through the Dover lanes when Dilys Kearney heard the snuffling. It came from behind a pallet of tinned tomatoes, a wet, determined sound, and when she angled her torch under the trailer seal, two black eyes like currants looked back at her.

"Not my doing," said the driver, Mehmet, who had made the run for eleven years and had never once been asked to explain a hedgehog. He had bought a crate of cabbages in Lille for his mother's allotment, and the animal had come in with the leaves, rolled into a ball the size of a cricket ball and furious about it.

Dilys had seen plenty of things in the back of trailers: a goat, a bag of live eels, a man who was certain he had paid for his cigarettes. There was no box on the form for a hedgehog. So she fetched a cardboard carton from the staff kitchen, folded in a tea towel and set a saucer of water beside it. The hedgehog unrolled slowly, turned its narrow snout towards the open door and walked the length of the floor as though it had a train to catch, one foot after another, spines lifting and settling like a bristled brush.

She carried the box out past the fencing to the verge where the car park gave way to hawthorn and nettles, and tipped it gently on its side. The hedgehog considered the grass, then the sky, then her boots, and went into the undergrowth without a backward glance. Dilys wrote on the form in neat capitals: CARGO, ONE, NOT DECLARED. RETURNED TO THE COUNTRY OF ORIGIN.
