Small light bulb on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Mixed · Photo

A small light bulb is tattooed on the side of an ankle, with a thin dark outline and a yellow fill inside the glass. The linework is fine and even, and the bulb has a simple filament drawn in the base. The soft blue background and blurred skin make the bulb the clear focus of the composition.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Marta had carried the bulb wrapped in her father's wool coat for three miles, and by the time the path met the first birches she could feel the glass through the cloth like a held breath. The village of Hollin sat at the forest edge, where the last power pole gave up and the cables ran underground. Nobody in Hollin had seen a proper light since the storm took the line down in March.

The bulb belonged to Aunt Ruth, who kept the mill house on the far side of the wood. She had sent word with the postman that the wire inside needed mending before the lambing, but Marta's father had a cough that turned his hands to paper. So Marta went instead, with the bulb, a spool of copper wire and instructions written on the back of a seed packet.

Halfway through the trees the path forked around a fallen oak, and she sat on its trunk to rest. Something glowed under the moss at her feet, a cluster of fungus, pale green and pulsing faintly. She pressed her palm to the cloth and felt a warmth answer from inside, as though the glass knew its own kind. She unwrapped it there in the grey light and watched the yellow fill catch the green.

At the mill, Ruth took one look at the bulb and laughed. The filament had snapped years ago, and she had only wanted the glass to hang above the door where the moths gathered. Marta fitted the wire, turned the switch, and the yard flickered gold. "Keep the fungus for yourself," Ruth said, pressing a jar into her hands. "You'll need it on the walk home."
