A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The band at the Pavilion played the same waltz every Saturday, because the bandleader's late wife had danced to it and nobody had the nerve to change it. Ida Merrow came in off the shingle with sand still in her shoes and found the floor already crowded with fishermen's daughters and men in borrowed collars. She was not looking for a partner. She was looking for the stranger from the Thursday boat, the one who had asked at the harbour office which way the tide went out.

Her grandmother had told her the old tale plainly, the way you'd give someone a recipe. A girl who could draw a curl of water with one finger, and have the sea agree to it, could keep any man she danced with from drowning. Ida had never tried it. The sea had never needed her persuading. But when Tobias Rell took her hand under the paper lanterns, he asked what the tide would do if she asked it nicely, and she laughed and said it would do what it always did.

He was sailing on the dawn packet to Lisbon, a berth on a cargo ship, and he had a pen from the ticket table in his top pocket. Near the end of the waltz he held out his wrist without a word. Ida took the pen, pressed the nib gently to the soft skin inside, and drew a small wave with a curl at the crest, the kind she had seen on every tide chart her father ever folded. It took three breaths. He looked at it as though it were a promise he had not yet agreed to.

At dawn the packet pulled out past the breakwater, and Ida stood on the wet sand with the tide coming in and the band still playing somewhere in her head. The sea rolled up and curled over itself, neat as a pen stroke, and broke white against the stones. She did not wave. She simply watched it fold back on itself and come home, which was all the old tale had ever asked of anyone.
