Smiley, alien and moon finger tattoos

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A hand held up in a peace sign shows small black outline tattoos on the fingers: a smiley face on the index finger, an alien head on the middle finger, and a crescent moon on the ring finger, with a tiny symbol on the little finger. The linework is thin and uniform with no shading, and the ink is solid black against the skin. Behind the hand is a colourful traditional flash sheet showing a dagger and a heart, and a person in a black top is partly visible at the right.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dorrie Hale had her fingers inked in a back room at Goole by a man off a Hull collier who would only say he was owed for a crossing. Nobody on the Aire and Calder thought much of it at first. Then she began using them, and the barge children copied her with biro on their knuckles.

The signs were simple, and the water folk learned them quickly. The moon on her ring finger meant come to the lock after dark. The alien meant the bailiff was walking the towpath. The smiling face meant all was well, and the peace sign, held up over the bow, meant two boats could pass without a fight. The small triangle on her little finger she would never explain, and when Jack Lowry asked, she only said it was for the boat that was not there.

In the wet autumn of the big flood, Jack's narrowboat was jammed against the weir with his father's dog aboard and the bailiff's lamp coming along the far bank. Dorrie stood on the lock side with the water roaring below and held up her hand. She showed the alien first, then the moon, and Jack, watching from the cabin roof, understood her well enough. The lamp swung away from the water and went back the way it came.

Jack brought the boat through at two in the morning with the dog barking the whole length of the chamber. Dorrie put her hands back in her pockets and walked home along the cut, the moon on her finger still wet with rain.
