The hen party had gone wrong at the second pub, and by seven on Saturday morning Marnie was sitting on the edge of her sister's bath with a sheet of gold transfers in her lap and no idea which way up Bride was supposed to go. Her sister Jo had insisted on the proper ones, the metallic kind, and had ordered eleven of them from a shop that promised they would last through a full day of dancing. Marnie read the instructions twice. Damp the back. Press for thirty seconds. Peel slowly, like you mean it.

She pressed the first one onto the inside of her wrist and got the letters backwards. Team sat neatly over the pulse point, and Bride came out the wrong side of the paper, so that it read as a dare. Jo laughed from the bedroom doorway, already in her dressing gown with her hair in foil. Put it on the other way round, she said, and it'll be the bride's job to be surprised.
Marnie tried again on her forearm, then her ankle, then a stubborn patch of shoulder that refused to take the gold at all. By the time the car came the sheets were scattered across the kitchen table like a fortune-teller's cards, half of them stuck to Marnie's fingers. She gave Jo the one that had come out cleanest, a little crooked, the B slightly lopsided like a hat knocked sideways. Jo held it up to the window light and the gold caught fire on the glass.
