Three small elephants on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo

Three small elephants walk in a row, each drawn in a single thin outline, with the smallest at the front and the largest at the back. The lines are fine and even, and each elephant is filled with a different colour: pink or red, green and blue. The tattoo is fresh and sits on pale skin, with gloved hands holding the arm and a patterned knitted fabric in the background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell had counted the windfalls twice before Dad came down the ladder, and by then the wasps had found the bruised side of the Egremont Russet nearest the gate. "Three rows left," he said, wiping his hands on his trousers. "Then we'll see about the elephants."

She didn't ask what elephants. Last spring he had told her about the three that came out of the hedge at dusk, the smallest one first, pink as a sunburnt thumb, then the green one who always stopped to scratch its back on the plum tree, and at the back the blue one, tallest, who had to duck under the low limb of the Bramley. They had walked the whole orchard that way, nose to tail, looking for the place where the apples fell first.

Nell carried the basket to the wall. The sun lay flat and gold on the grass, and the windfalls had split open like little bells. Behind her the hedge rustled. She did not turn round straight away. Dad had taught her that the elephants didn't care to be looked at too quickly.

When she finally looked, the pink one was there, knee-deep in clover, its trunk curled round a fallen apple as if it were a teacup. The green one was rubbing its side against the plum. The blue one stood under the Bramley, head lowered politely, the way Dad waited for the kettle to boil. Nell set the last apple on the wall and went back for the basket. When she looked again, the three of them were walking away down the row, smallest first, and the blue one ducked under the Bramley without slowing down.
