Witchcraft lettering across the toes

Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo

Two bare feet rest on a white cloth, with the word WITCHCRAFT tattooed in thin black capital letters across the toes, one letter per toe. The letters are evenly spaced, with simple sans-serif forms and clean, solid linework. The ink is black only, and the dark nail polish and pale skin make the lettering stand out against the soft, close-up composition.

Dear Mam, the Harvest Fair has moved on to Stourbridge and I am sorry I did not write sooner, but the ghost train keeps breaking down and Mr Penrose has me up every night with a spanner. You will want to know about the fortune tent. Madame Oriel left in March with a sailor from Hull, so the tent is mine now, and the sign on the flap says what it always said. I have added nothing to it, though I wanted to.

Yesterday a girl of about nine came in with her gran, who paid for a reading and then stood at the back with her arms folded. The child sat on the cushion and would not take her shoes off, so I asked her to show me her feet instead. She did, very solemnly, and I saw the letters Mr Penrose's cousin inked on for her birthday, one to a toe, spelling out a word the gran had never liked. I read them out loud, letter by letter, and the child laughed so hard she had to hold her sides.

I told her the cards said she would be very good at keeping secrets. Her gran did not approve, but she paid double on the way out. I have pinned a torn corner of that word above my table now, in case it brings me luck. Write back soon, and tell Dad the donkey is still owed a carrot.

Your loving daughter, Nell
