Black cartoon cat on a calf
Calf · Mixed · Photo
A black cartoon cat sits upright, facing the viewer, with large white eyes, an open red mouth showing small fangs, and a long curled tail. The bold black outline is filled with soft grey shading, and the inside of the ears is tinted purple. The tattoo is shown on a pale lower leg against a wooden floor, with the cat centred on the calf.

Hush now, and you at the back, stop kicking that bench. Sit where the lamplight reaches, because this is the tale of Corvin Tallow, the black cat of Saltmere Keep, and the morning the bell rang thirteen times. Everybody in the kingdom of Ambermoor knew the bell had only twelve strokes. The thirteenth sent a hunting hound under a cart and sent Corvin up the bell tower stairs three at a time, his ears flat, his mouth wide open in a shriek the old men still won't repeat.

Up in the tower, the bell-keeper, a grey woman named Mother Ysolde, sat on a stool with her knitting in her lap and nothing at all wrong with her. 'Well,' she said, looking at the cat's great round eyes, 'who frightened you?' Corvin could not tell her. He only knew that something under the bronze had moved, and that the bell had rung for a reason nobody had asked for. So he sat down on the knitting, which was the only thing he could think to do, and he stared at the rope.
They climbed together, cat and woman, past the beams and the roosting pigeons, and found at the very top a little brass clapper gone green, wrapped in a child's red mitten. Someone had hung it there years before and forgotten it, and every winter the wind worked it against the bronze. Ysolde unwound the mitten and laughed until she had to sit down. Corvin, who had never once in nine lives been embarrassed, decided he had not been frightened at all, only surprised, and that this was a different thing entirely.
And that, my friends, is why the bell in Ambermoor rings only twelve times, and why no cat in the kingdom will be called a coward to his face. Now off you go before your mothers come looking, and mind the third step on the way down, for it creaks like a ghost.
