Crossed arrows with heart and LOVE letters
Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A small black tattoo shows two crossed arrows forming an X, with a solid heart above the centre and the letters L, V and E placed at the left, right and bottom points. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the tattoo is in black ink on pale skin. The tattoo sits in the centre of the frame against a plain background, with a sliver of a second partial script tattoo visible at the right edge.

The gulls had been quarrelling since before light when Mared Tolley came down to the harbour wall with a pot of ink and a borrowed brush. Her husband Eli had gone out on the Dorothy two nights before, and the wind had swung round to the north-east, which in Skerry Quay meant nobody slept well.

The harbourmaster, old Pryce, watched her from his hut and said nothing. She painted two arrows across the wet stone, one running from the lamp-post to the chapel roof, the other from the slipway to the fish market, and where they crossed she drew a heart. Then she wrote the letters at the ends of the arms, L to the west, V to the east and E to the south, because that was where the boats came in from, and she left the north empty for the heart to face.
Pryce asked why she hadn't put an O in the middle. She said a heart was the only shape that could hold the sea and still point home, and that a letter could be read from whichever side a man happened to be standing. He laughed at her, then stopped laughing when the rain came on and the tide did not turn.
The Dorothy came in on the morning flood, low in the water and steering wrong. Eli stood at the rail and read the stones the way she had written them, first the L, then the V, then the E at the foot of the quay, and by the time he reached the heart he had stopped steering by anything else.
