Hat outline on the inner wrist
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A clenched hand is shown against a wooden background, with yellow and one blue nail polish. A single thin black line forms a simple hat-like outline with a rounded crown and a flat brim, sitting on the inner wrist. The linework is even and unshaded, and the small, centred composition keeps the tattoo as the clear focus.

The wind took my father's hat on the third bend above Carrow Gap, and he did not chase it. He stood with one hand flat on the mule's neck and watched it cartwheel down the scree until it was a dark speck against the grey stones. "Hat's paid its way," he said, and we went on up the pass in the sleet with our heads bare.

For nineteen winters he went without. He wore a knitted cap my mother had made and swore at the sun when it caught his eyes. I grew up thinking the hat was a story he told to make the loss sound like a choice. Then, the summer I turned sixteen, a shepherd from Tressle came down the track with a bundle of fleece, and wrapped inside it was a battered crown the colour of wet slate.
It had snagged on a juniper beside the old cairn. The crown still held its round shape, but the brim was bent flat where the rain had pooled on it for years. My father turned it over in his hands for a long time. He did not put it on. He asked me for the awl and a length of waxed thread, and he sewed the split back shut by the stove, slow as a man counting sheep.
We hung it on the nail by the hut door, where it still hangs. Each morning I see it before the mules, before the cold, before anything. He never wore it up the pass again, but he never once let anyone say the mountain had kept it.
