Kawaii character peeking from a basket

Forearm · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a round white cartoon character with pink cheeks and a small smile, peeking over an orange gridded block set inside a brown woven ring. Two green leaf-shaped points rise behind the block. Bold black outlines define the shapes, with flat areas of orange, green, brown and pink, and the design sits neatly centred on the skin.

The honeycomb sponge had lost its corner again, and Hetty Marsh knew who to blame before she reached the back shelf. Pim was sitting in the wicker proving basket with crumbs on his chin, looking pleased with himself. He was about the size of a cottage loaf and the colour of unbaked dough, and he had turned up in the bakery cellar the winter the boiler failed. Nobody at the Whitby market stalls could say where from.

Hetty had tried everything. She moved the basket, padlocked the pantry, and once left a sponge with a note that read PLEASE DON'T EAT THIS ONE, which he did anyway, carefully, leaving the note untouched. Her brother Clem said the only sensible thing was to charge him rent. So on Friday she set a saucer of sugar syrup on the stool beside the basket, weighted a ledger on top of it, and went home to wait.

When she came in at six the ledger had been moved. Inside it, in pencil that sloped like a child's, were three words and a small drawn leaf: Thank you, Hetty. Beside the saucer sat a neat wedge of sponge on a blue plate, cut square and untouched by teeth, the honeycomb grid perfectly even.

Hetty carried the plate to the front window, where the morning sun would come through the gaps and lay little gold squares across the floor. She did not tell Clem. She left the cellar door open a crack, and the syrup saucer full.
