Metallic chain, arc and sunburst flash sheet
Geometric · Mixed · Flash
A white background holds a symmetrical sheet of metallic temporary tattoo designs in gold, silver and turquoise. The central motif is a sunburst of linked circles with small dot-tipped rays, flanked by curved rows of oval chain links and two arched bars. Small filigree ornaments and outlined heart-and-arrow motifs sit at the sides, with the layout mirrored left to right.

Don't look at me like that, I haven't finished. You want the end of the Marvellini show, you sit still and let the old man talk. The sun went out of that tent the spring the lamp-wheel broke. Forty bulbs on a copper ring, and Ada Pell, who did the wire work, had soldered every one herself, dot-tipped like the rays on a child's drawing. When the wheel turned the whole tent went gold, and the brass chains we hung along the poles swung and rang like a church at a christening.

Then the council man came with his clipboard and his opinions about fire regulations, and the big top was sold to a car park by August. We carried the wheel out through the back of the Hackney field on our shoulders, six of us, Ada at the front swearing at the cable. Nobody had the money to melt the copper down, so it went into a cart with the chains and the two iron arches from the trapeze, and the cart went north.
Forty years on, a girl came to my door in Ipswich holding a photograph of that wheel. She'd found it in a skip. I told her the truth: the bulbs had gone dark years before, and Ada had kept the arch that fits over the lion cage. Nothing shines once nobody looks at it, I said. She laughed and asked if I had a lamp she could borrow.
So I gave her the spare bulb from the drawer, the one with the loose filament that never once lit. She turned it in the window and it caught the morning, and for a second the whole room went the colour of a fox's coat. That is the trick of it, you see. Gold on a dead thing still remembers the sun.
