Paw print trail with script on the upper back

Back · Mixed · Photo

A trail of paw prints steps diagonally across the skin, growing larger from left to right, with the words "I'll meet you at the bridge" written in black handwritten-style script beneath them. The prints have black outlines and are filled with blue, purple, teal, green and orange, while the lettering is solid black. The photo is taken close-up and at an angle, with a red garment visible at the bottom edge.

Tuesday. Rain came off the sea all morning, but the sand below the back steps still holds the marks of Tansy's feet from before the storm. Mrs Dunn at number nine says the dog arrived with the Ashworth family in June and never left with them, and I have stopped trying to argue her out of the kitchen. The prints lead from the bins to the groyne, and they get bigger as they go, as though she was growing up on the way.

Mr Hale in room four has been dipping her pads into his watercolour tins for the children on the terrace. Blue for the first one, he says, then purple, teal and green, and an orange one for the day the Ashworths' boy learnt to whistle. He pressed them onto card and pinned the cards to the hall board, so that every guest passing to breakfast walks past a little history of her paws.

This evening the prints ran straight past the steps and out along the old footbridge over the Lenn, where the tide turns. I took the torch and followed them to the rail. They stopped there, one after another, and then there was only the black water and the gulls settling on the posts.

I went back for her lead and hung it on the rail with its clip open, the way she always liked it. Mr Hale asked in the morning whether I had been out at the bridge. I said yes, and that I had told her I would come along when my turn came.
