Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

Two side-by-side tattoos show small, cartoon-style chibi versions of the anime characters Sasuke and Naruto. The left figure is drawn mostly in black ink with a purple collar, while the right figure has yellow spiky hair, an orange headband and red accents on a dark outfit. The bold outlines and flat fills are set against pale skin, with the two arms photographed close together.

By the third day out of Harwich the swell has got into everything, and Tomasz still hasn't spoken to you since the bet over the lifeboat drill. You find him where you knew he'd be, wedged behind the galley vent with a mug of stewed tea he hasn't touched, glaring at the grey line of the North Sea as if it owes him money.

You have known him since the cadet course, when he was the boy who corrected every knot while you tied them wrong on purpose just to watch him fume. He never laughed at your jokes. He just stayed close enough to catch you when you slipped, and pretended he hadn't. That was the arrangement. Nobody aboard would have believed it if you'd told them.

Off the Dogger Bank a gull lands on the rail between you and drops a chip wrapper onto his boots, and for once he laughs, a short bark that surprises you both. You pass him the biscuit tin. He takes a custard cream, then a second, and the rain starts coming sideways, and neither of you moves to go inside.

When the Rotterdam lights finally show, low and orange on the horizon, he tips his tea over the side and says he's going to be insufferable about this for a year. You tell him he already is. He grins, the wide, daft grin you have only ever seen him use on you, and bumps your shoulder hard enough to hurt.
