Small outline heart on a shoulder
Fine line · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A small, simple heart outlined in dark ink sits on the upper back near the shoulder blade of a tanned skin tone. The linework is thin and even, with no shading inside the shape. The composition is close-up, with a white vest strap and a woven straw hat in the foreground and the heart as the focal point.

Dear Ruth,

The ink pad at Kestle Bridge has dried to a crust again, so I have been using the blue biro from the lost property drawer. It makes a thin line, and I find I like the thinness. This morning a man from the timber lorries held his papers out to me with a dirty thumb and asked whether the river was still high. I told him it was, and he laughed as if I had made a joke, and drove on towards your side.
Mr Okafor, who has the window beside mine, says the drawer of lost things is the only honest record we keep. Yesterday it gave up a child's glove, a pocket knife, and a pressed violet between two bus tickets. I sorted them into the tray as usual, and then, without thinking, I drew a small outline heart on the corner of the violet's envelope, the way you used to do on my maths homework when you wanted me to smile in class. No shading. You always said shading was for people who did not trust a line.
I am sending you the envelope. The violet is still in it. If the bridge opens on the first of the month as they promise, come through on the Thursday bus and show the officer this letter, not your passport. He is called Dennis and he is kinder than he looks. Tell him the heart is for Nell's sister and he will wave you on without asking what it means.
Love, Nell
