Lettering · Black and grey · Photo

Two side-by-side photos show the same tattoo: a wand wrapped in ribbon banners, with four paw prints above and footprints along the lower left. The left panel shows the lettering on the banners as fine outlines, while the right panel shows the wand and ribbons with more shading and tonal depth. The image is in black and grey with a plain light background.

Old Mrs Tully kept her hazel wand in the potting shed, wrapped in three strips of linen that had once been her wedding sheet. She said the wand was not for waving. It was for keeping account.

The dog, Brindle, had been trouble since the day he came over the back wall with a stolen sausage. Every night the gate latch lifted by itself, and every morning the frost on the lawn showed four neat pads going out and four coming back, and then the long dragged marks of a second set of boots that were not Tully's. Dai swore it was the fox. The fox had no business with a wand.

On the first frost of November she stood at the gate with the wand in her hand and waited. Near midnight the latch lifted. Brindle trotted out onto the lawn, sniffed the air, and turned round to look at her as if asking permission for something already decided. She tapped the wand once on the gatepost. The ribbons unfurled, and the words on them caught the lamplight.

Next morning the boot prints were gone, and so was the sausage. Only the four paws remained on the step, pointing back towards the shed, where the wand leaned against the wall with a fresh strip tied on top, bright as new linen.
